About Liao Shangjing Site
Shangjing, founded in 918, was the first capital of the Khitan-built Liao dynasty, and its ruins beside the Shali River form a national archaeological site park. The northern imperial city still has rammed-earth walls several metres high, which visitors can follow on a boardwalk through the horseshoe-shaped barbican of the west gate, and the remains of a large Buddhist temple stand on a rise inside the walls. The Liao Shangjing Museum beside the site shows tomb murals, epitaphs, clay arhat figures from the temple and a model of the city.
