About Banyueshan Giant Buddha

A Maitreya Buddha about 20 metres tall carved into the hillside of Banyue Mountain south of Ziyang, the largest of six niches at the site. An inscription of 793 survives in the niche, though when carving began is debated, and the figure was finished only in 1131, under the Southern Song. The temple that once stood in front was pulled down during the Cultural Revolution, when the statue was also damaged.
