About Mount Jizu
A Buddhist holy mountain north-east of Erhai Lake, venerated as the place where the Buddha's disciple Mahakashyapa waits for the coming of the future Buddha, and a meeting point of Chinese, Tibetan and Theravada Buddhist traditions. Under the Ming dynasty it held hundreds of temples; many were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and only some have been rebuilt, chief among them Zhusheng Temple in the heart of the mountain and Jinding Temple on the 3,248 m Tianzhu Peak, topped by the 42 m Lengyan Pagoda completed in 1934. The Ming traveller Xu Xiake climbed it twice and compiled the mountain's gazetteer.
