About Huayan Temple Pagodas

Two brick pagodas stand on the edge of the Shaoling plateau above the Fanchuan valley, all that survived when Huayan Temple, birthplace of the Huayan school of Buddhism, was destroyed by a landslide in the 18th century. The larger, a seven-storey square pagoda of 642, is the tomb pagoda of the school's founder Dushun; the smaller, hexagonal one honours the fourth patriarch Chengguan, was recorded as rebuilt in 1272 and was moved a short distance in 1986 after another landslide. During that move relics, early Qing sutras and Buddhist images were found inside it.
