About Juyong Pass

A Ming fortress pass in the Guangou valley north-west of Beijing, one of the 'three inner passes' that guarded the capital, where a walled garrison town with gated barbicans at both ends closes the valley and the Great Wall climbs steeply up the slopes on either side. Inside the pass stands the Cloud Platform, a white-marble base built in 1342–1345 for three Tibetan-style stupas, whose archway is carved with the Four Heavenly Kings and with Buddhist texts in six scripts: Sanskrit, Tibetan, Phags-pa, Uyghur, Tangut and Chinese.

How to get to Juyong Pass

In Nankou town, Changping District, about 50 km north-west of central Beijing beside the G6 Beijing–Tibet Expressway, roughly an hour by road; Badaling is about 10 km further up the valley.
