About Fangta Pagoda (Chongjiao Xingfu Temple Pagoda)
Changshu's 'Square Pagoda' is the surviving pagoda of Chongjiao Xingfu Temple, begun in 1130 and rebuilt in 1272. It is square in plan, with nine storeys of brick and projecting wooden eaves that give it a gently curved outline, and has wooden stairs inside; its ground-floor gallery was destroyed by bombing during the war against Japan. It stands in Fangta Park, a garden laid out on the former temple site at the eastern end of the old town.
