About Butterfly Spring

A clear, square spring pool edged with marble at the foot of the Cangshan range, about 27 km north of Dali Old Town. It is famous for accounts of butterflies gathering over the water in spring, recorded by the Ming traveller Xu Xiake, although such swarms are now rarely seen. The spring is the centrepiece of a landscaped park and a common stop on trips around Erhai Lake.
