About Derge Parkhang

The Derge Parkhang is a working Tibetan printing house founded in 1729 by Tenpa Tsering, king of Derge, and attached to the Sakya-school Gonchen Monastery. It holds what is described as the world's largest collection of carved Tibetan woodblocks, from which scriptures, commentaries and works on history and medicine are still printed by hand, with printers working in pairs to ink the blocks and roll the paper.
