About Fangji Island (Chicken Island)

An island of about 1.9 km² off the Dianbai coast, Maoming's largest, with a sandy beach on its north side, cliffs on the east and a hilltop lighthouse. Long without permanent residents, it was leased to a private developer in 2004 and is now run as a resort island with hotels and villas, a Tianhou temple, snorkelling and diving. Its name, 'release-the-chicken island', comes from sailors who stopped here to pray for safe passage and set a chicken free on the hill.

How to get to Fangji Island (Chicken Island)

Reached by boat from Bohe town on the Maoming coast, about 8 nautical miles across the sea; the island is about 40 km south-east of central Maoming. The resort closed for upgrading in August 2024, so check that it is open before going.
