About Yanshan Temple
A small temple on the northern side of Mount Wutai, founded in 1158 in the Jin dynasty and formerly called Lingyan Temple, best known for the Jin murals in its Manjusri Hall. The murals cover more than 90 m² and were painted by the court painter Wang Kui and others, showing the life of the Buddha and other Buddhist stories in settings of palaces, streets and shops. The hall also keeps Jin painted sculptures including a Water-Moon Guanyin, and a local saying sets the temple beside the Yongle Palace: Yongle Palace in the south, Yanshan Temple in the north.
