About Laomudeng and Zhiziluo
Two neighbouring places high on the eastern slopes of the Nu River canyon in Pihe Nu Township. Laomudeng is a Nu village with a plain Christian church, while Zhiziluo, about 2 km away along a footpath, was the seat of Nujiang Prefecture from 1954 to 1974 and of Bijiang County until 1986, and its largely empty buildings from that era now draw visitors as a 'city of memory'.
How to get to Laomudeng and Zhiziluo
Up a side road above the Nu River canyon road in Fugong County, roughly 2–3 hours' drive north of Liuku; carry your passport, as police checkpoints on the canyon road check ID.
