About Baiheliang Underwater Museum

A museum built around White Crane Ridge, a rock ledge in the Yangtze off Fuling that showed above water only in the dry season and bears some 170 inscriptions and carved fish recording the river's low levels in 72 years since 764. When the Three Gorges reservoir submerged the ridge, it was enclosed in a shell of filtered water about 40 m down; visitors ride a 91 m escalator to a gallery and look at the carvings through 23 portholes. The museum opened in 2009, with exhibition halls on the riverbank explaining the inscriptions.
