About Chongming Temple, Gaoping

A Buddhist temple in a hill valley, laid out in two courtyards, whose central hall was begun in 971 in the early Northern Song. The hall has deep eaves on large seven-tier bracket sets and no interior columns, and its main beams are each made of two equal short timbers joined end to end, a construction rare among surviving Chinese timber buildings. The rear hall, repaired in 1591, has stone column bases at its front carved with mounted warriors.
