About Palcho Monastery

Palcho (Pelkor Chöde) Monastery, below the hills on the north-western edge of Gyantse, was built from 1418 by the local ruler Rabten Kunzang Phag with the scholar Khedrup Je, and is unusual in housing Gelug, Sakya and Shalu communities side by side. Beside its assembly hall rises the Gyantse Kumbum, a many-tiered stupa whose dozens of small chapels are lined with 15th-century murals and statues in the local Gyantse style. Together with the fortress it is the main sight of Gyantse.
