About Xiuying Fort
A Qing coastal fort on a low rise above Haikou's north-western shore, built in the early 1890s on the orders of the viceroy Zhang Zhidong to guard the Qiongzhou Strait against a French threat. Five emplacements for German-made Krupp guns stand in a line facing the sea, with barracks, a magazine and a parade ground behind, and displays of historical photographs. It is counted with the Humen, Wusong and Dagu forts as one of China's four great old coastal forts, and is now hemmed in by apartment blocks.
