About Astor House Hotel
Astor House was founded in 1863 by the British missionary John Innocent on the Hai River embankment and was the first foreign-funded hotel in Tianjin; the present building dates from an enlargement in 1886 and a further wing added in 1924. Sun Yat-sen and Herbert Hoover are among the guests recorded there, and treaties and consular business were handled in its rooms in the 19th century. It is still a working hotel, and its museum on the building's history is open to the public.
