About Opium War Museum and Humen Forts
The museum in Humen town stands where the imperial commissioner Lin Zexu publicly destroyed confiscated opium in 1839, the event that led to the First Opium War, and its grounds keep the two destruction pools, rebuilt in 1957. Its Sea Battle Museum branch, opened in 1999 near the Weiyuan forts on Nanshan hill, holds the main exhibition on the Opium Wars, and the museum also looks after the Shajiao forts to the south. The Humen forts were begun in 1717, wrecked in both Opium Wars and rebuilt each time.
