About Baoguo Temple
A hillside temple north-west of Ningbo whose main hall, built in 1013, is one of the few Northern Song timber buildings surviving south of the Yangtze. The hall predates the Song building manual Yingzao Fashi by 90 years yet matches it closely, with melon-ribbed pillars and three caisson ceilings, while the outer eaves were added in 1684. There are no monks now: the halls form an architecture museum explaining how the building was made.
