About Sekhar Guthok Monastery
Tradition says the nine-storey stone tower at the heart of this monastery was built in the 11th century by the yogi Milarepa as a trial set by his teacher Marpa; the top two floors were rebuilt in 1985. Beside it, the assembly hall added in the 16th century by the Kagyu scholar Pawo Tsuglag Trengwa has murals said to be by his own hand. Long a Kagyu house, the monastery has followed the Gelug school since 1944.
