About Four Gates Pagoda
A single-storey stone pagoda of square plan, about 7 m along each side, with an arched doorway in each face and a roof of stacked stone slabs, standing beside the ruins of Shentong Temple. An inscription found inside the roof in 1972 dates it to 611, in the Sui dynasty, and it is thought to be the oldest surviving pavilion-style stone pagoda in China. Inside, a central pillar carries four seated Buddhas dated to 544, and an old pine and two small Tang-dynasty pagodas stand nearby.
