About Taozhou Garrison Town

The walls of a Ming garrison town, rebuilt from 1379 as the seat of the Taozhou Guard on the old Tang–Tibet road, which still enclose the small town of Xincheng in Lintan county; it is regarded as the largest surviving garrison town (weicheng) in China. The walls run 5.43 km and stand up to 9.9 m high, climbing from the riverside plain to a ridge almost 300 m above it, with beacon platforms on the western ridge; they were badly damaged in an earthquake in 2013.
