About Chengtoushan Archaeological Site Park

Chengtoushan, on the Liyang plain north-west of Li County town, is a round Neolithic town about 325 m across inside a rammed-earth wall and moat that were first built in the Daxi culture more than 6,000 years ago and enlarged several times before the town was abandoned around 4,000 years ago. Excavations from 1991 uncovered house platforms, pottery kilns, cemeteries, an altar, very early fired bricks and rice paddies that are among the oldest known anywhere. Since 2016 the site has been a national archaeological site park, with the walls and moat laid out for visitors and a site museum for the finds.
