About Lizhuang Ancient Town
A riverside town on the south bank of the Yangtze east of Yibin, with stone-paved lanes, Qing-dynasty guild halls and temples, and the Zhang family ancestral hall with its windows carved with a hundred cranes. From 1940, during the war against Japan, it sheltered Tongji University, institutes of Academia Sinica and the Society for the Study of Chinese Architecture, whose former premises, where Liang Sicheng finished his history of Chinese architecture, are now a protected site. On the edge of town stands the Ming-dynasty Xuanluo Hall, which Liang counted among Lizhuang's 'four wonders'.
