About Yongchang Fort
A fortified village built in 1558 by the local Wang family against Japanese pirates, after two of their kinsmen were killed fighting the raiders, and described as the only surviving privately built walled town in Zhejiang. The rectangular fort keeps its north wall, most of the east wall and the east gate with its barbican and gun gallery, and a moat and two canals run through a village of old houses that includes the Wang ancestral hall.
