About Chapel of Our Lady of Penha
A neoclassical chapel with a steeple on top of Penha Hill (Colina da Penha), first founded in 1622 by the crew and passengers of a ship that had narrowly escaped capture by the Dutch. It was rebuilt in 1935 together with the neighbouring Bishop's Residence, which gave the 62.7-metre hill its other name, Bishop's Hill. Sailors once came here to pray before dangerous voyages, and the hill looks out over Praia Grande Bay.
