Why go to Mount Hua

The western of China's Five Great Mountains, Mount Hua is a cluster of granite peaks joined by stairways hewn into the rock. Cable cars do most of the climbing; the real thrill is walking the ridges between the summits and, for the brave, clipping into a harness for the Plank Walk in the Sky on the South Peak.

The story

Hua Shan has been a Taoist stronghold for centuries, and hermits once lived in caves cut into these cliffs; the plank walk is said to have been built to reach one such remote meditation spot. Many visitors still climb through the night to watch sunrise from the East Peak.

How to visit Mount Hua

Most visitors ride a cable car up to a peak and walk the ridges between the summits. A common easy route rides up to the North Peak, then visits the East, South, West and Central peaks before heading down, which guides put at about five to six hours; the traditional climb on foot from the gorge, past Qingke Plain and Golden Lock Pass, takes far longer and is often done overnight to reach the East Peak for dawn. With less time, ride one cable car up and down and stay on the nearest peaks. Back at the foot, the Xiyue Temple in Huayin, about 5 km north of the mountain, is a worthwhile add-on.

How to get to Mount Hua

Huashan North station is about 30–40 minutes from Xi'an North by high-speed train; shuttle buses run from there to the visitor centre and the cable car stations.

Where to stay

Huayin, the county town at the foot of the mountain, is the practical base for an early start, with food and rooms that are cheaper than on the mountain. For dawn on the summit, a guesthouse on the East Peak is the alternative; otherwise Xi'an works for a day trip by high-speed train.
