About Yangshan Quarry

An ancient stone quarry in the hills near Tangshan where, from 1405, the Yongle Emperor had a vast memorial stele cut for his father's tomb, the Ming Xiaoling, using a huge labour force. The three parts, the tortoise base, the tablet and its crowning head, were never moved because they were far too heavy, and they still lie where they were carved, partly freed from the bedrock; a much smaller stele was set up at the tomb instead. The quarry is the centre of a 4A scenic area branded the Ming Culture Village.
