About Nantong Museum

Founded in 1905 by the industrialist and educator Zhang Jian, Nantong Museum is regarded as the first public museum set up by a Chinese founder, laid out as a garden with exhibition halls among lawns, ponds and trees. Its early South, Central and North halls, the oldest from 1906, still stand beside a new main building of 2005 by the architect Wu Liangyong, and the collections cover local history, art and natural history. The grounds also take in Haonan Villa, Zhang Jian's 1910s house, which mixes Western columns and fireplaces with a Chinese courtyard garden and now tells his life story.
