About Puji Temple
The 'front temple' and principal Guanyin shrine of Mount Putuo, which grew out of the shrine founded for a Guanyin image that the Japanese monk Egaku left on the island, and took its present name from a plaque given by the Kangxi Emperor. Its halls, largely rebuilt in 1731–34, cover about 37,000 m², and the main Yuantong Hall holds a Vairocana Guanyin surrounded by the bodhisattva's 32 manifestations. Beside it stands the Duobao Pagoda, a three-tier stone pagoda paid for by a Yuan prince in 1333–34 and the oldest surviving structure on the island.
