About Nanhua Temple
Founded in the early 6th century as Baolin Temple, Nanhua Temple on the Caoxi stream is where Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, taught from 677, making it the ancestral seat of Southern Chan. Its halls were largely rebuilt from 1934 under the monk Xuyun, and the Sixth Patriarch Hall enshrines a seated figure of Huineng made over his body; the temple also keeps Song-dynasty wooden arhat carvings.
