About Shuihui Garden
Shuihui Garden in Rugao was begun by the Mao family in the late Ming and became the home of the scholar Mao Xiang (Mao Pijiang) and the courtesan Dong Xiaowan, whose romance made it famous. Built around water in an Anhui-influenced style, it centres on the Shuiming Lou, a two-storey boat-like pavilion by the Xibo Pond added in the Qianlong era. The wider scenic area also holds a garden of Rugao-style bonsai, including a cypress said to be 1,000 years old, and the Rugao Longevity Museum.
