About Former Residence of Mao Zedong, Shaoshan

The farmhouse at Shaoshanchong where Mao Zedong was born in 1893 and grew up: an earth-walled, U-shaped house of the central Hunan type, shared with a neighbouring family across the central hall, confiscated by the Nationalist government in 1929 and restored to its original form in 1950, with the family's bedrooms, kitchen and farm tools on show. It is the heart of the Shaoshan 5A scenic area, which also takes in the Mao Zedong Memorial Museum (opened 1964) with his personal belongings, the Mao clan ancestral hall and the Nan'an old village school, a square with a large bronze statue (1993), and Dishui Cave, a secluded villa compound built for Mao in 1960–62 about 4 km away, where he stayed in 1966.
