About Tangyue Memorial Archways

Seven stone memorial archways, built between 1420 and 1820, stand in a line on the approach to Tangyue, the home village of the Bao clan, merchants in Ming and Qing times, honouring filial piety, widows' chastity, charity and high office. Beside them are the Bao clan's Dunben Hall and the Qingyi Hall, an ancestral hall for the clan's women, and the village keeps a dozen listed old buildings. The large Bao Family Garden, destroyed in the Taiping war and rebuilt in 2002, is visited with the archways as one part of the Ancient Huizhou Culture Tourism Zone.
