About Yuliang Dam and Old Street
An ancient stone weir about 140 m long across the Lian River just south-east of Shexian town, first built in the Tang and rebuilt in 1605 from massive blocks locked together with stone dowels. It raised the river for boats, making Yuliang the main point from which Ming and Qing Huizhou merchants set out by water for Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Beside it runs Yuliang Street, a cobbled street of old houses and shops with lanes down to the wharves, where the Ming–Qing house of the salt-merchant family of the Qing seal carver Ba Weizu, the largest old residence in the village, was restored and opened as a museum.
