About Tradruk Temple

One of the earliest Buddhist temples in Tibet, founded in the 7th century under King Songtsen Gampo in the Yarlung valley and enlarged in the 14th century; its main assembly hall is laid out like that of the Jokhang in Lhasa. Legend says the king had a falcon defeat a dragon to drain the lake here, which gave the temple its name, and Princess Wencheng is said to have stayed. Its treasures include a thangka of Avalokiteshvara worked in pearls, made in the Phagmodrupa period.
