About Xianrendong and Diaotonghuan Caves

Xianrendong is a limestone cave in Dayuan basin, and Diaotonghuan a rock shelter on a hillside about 800 m away; together they hold deposits from roughly 35,000 to 9,000 years ago. Excavations between 1962 and 1999 turned up pottery about 20,000 years old, among the earliest known, and rice phytoliths showing that rice was being cultivated some 12,000 years ago. The site has an exhibition hall and a display area with simulated scenes of Stone Age life, such as threshing grain, fishing and making pottery.
