About Donglin Academy

A Confucian academy in central Wuxi founded in 1111, where the Song scholar Yang Shi taught, and revived in the early 1600s by Gu Xiancheng and Gao Panlong, whose circle of scholar-officials criticised court politics and became known as the Donglin faction. Destroyed in 1626 and rebuilt under the Qing, it keeps a stone memorial archway, the Lize and Yiyong lecture halls and the Daonan Shrine to Yang Shi, with Gu's well-known couplet about caring for 'the affairs of family, state and world'.
