About Hulishan Fort

A coastal fort on the south-eastern tip of Xiamen Island, completed in 1896 in a mix of European and Chinese styles, with granite ramparts, underground passages, barracks, magazines, lookout posts and a moat. Its main exhibit is a late-19th-century 280 mm Krupp breech-loading coastal gun, about 13 m long, the survivor of the fort's original pair; appraisals by the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the Krupp archive identified it as the largest surviving 19th-century coastal gun. The fort looks out across the water towards Kinmen.
