About Xuanhua Ancient City
The old walled city of Xuanhua, a Ming frontier stronghold known as the 'first prefecture west of Beijing', which has kept its Ming street layout and main monuments. The core is the Qingyuan Tower (bell tower, 1482) and the Zhenshuo Tower (drum tower, 1440), two multi-storey timber towers on brick platforms pierced by arched passages along the main street, with the Gongji Tower on the old south gate and long stretches of brick-faced city wall. The wall was enlarged in 1394, ran about 11 km round, and has been restored in sections since the mid-2000s.
