About Former Mingde Middle School (Xikang Museum)

A three-storey brick and stone building in a mix of Chinese and Western Republican-era styles on Zhangjiashan hill in Ya'an, built for the Mingde junior middle school, a mission school funded by the American Baptists and founded by the missionary Frederick N. Smith; the facade still bears the school's name. Since 2017 it has housed the Xikang Museum, which reopened in July 2025 after renovation: the ground-floor galleries follow the former Xikang province, whose capital moved to Ya'an in 1950, and the upper floor covers the history of Yucheng district, including a recreated Republican-era classroom.
