About Nihewan Archaeological Park

A basin in the Sanggan River valley where more than 80 early-human sites have been found, among them some of the oldest known traces of people in East Asia, with stone tools more than 1.5 million years old. The national archaeological park is centred on the Xiaochangliang site and has a research centre, protective sheds over key excavations such as Majuangou, and a visitor centre. The setting is eroded lake-bed cliffs and farmland rather than a monument, so it suits visitors with a particular interest in human origins.

How to get to Nihewan Archaeological Park

In Datianwa township, eastern Yangyuan County, about 14 km east of Dongcheng town and roughly 70 km south-south-west of Zhangjiakou city; a private car or taxi is the practical way.

Nearby

Also within 20 km: Sanggan River Grand Canyon and Feibu Gorge 桑干河大峡谷·飞瀑峡 (10 km).
