About Yanzhou Catholic Church
A German-built Catholic compound in the south-west of old Yanzhou, begun in 1897 and from 1946 the China headquarters of the Society of the Divine Word. The large Gothic cathedral finished in 1899 was destroyed in 1966, but the two-storey brick-and-timber bishop's house of 1901 and a monastery building with a cross and red-tiled roof survive. It was the mission centre for south-western Shandong and is listed as evidence of the exchange between Western and Chinese architecture.
