About Dongyang Houtu Temple
A temple in the middle of Dongyang village, founded in 1283 as an Eastern Peak temple, wrecked in the great earthquake of 1303 and rebuilt in 1345, and later renamed for the earth goddess Houtu. Its Yuan-period stage has a cross-gabled hip roof and a stacked bracket-set ceiling, the Houtu Hall dates from 1622 and holds Ming painted clay figures, and the double-eaved gate has honeycomb-like brackets. After 1949 the temple was used as a school, and several halls were pulled down in the 1970s.
