About Three Travellers' Cave

A limestone cave in a cliff above the Yangtze at the mouth of Xiling Gorge, named for two literary meetings: the poets Bai Juyi, his brother Bai Xingjian and Yuan Zhen explored it in 819, and Su Xun and his sons Su Shi and Su Zhe followed in 1056. The cave is about 30 m deep, and more than 40 inscriptions and steles survive inside and outside it, among them a Ming-dynasty recut of Bai Juyi's preface. Paths lead up to a hilltop pavilion with a view along the river and down to Lu You Spring, a small pool where the Song poet Lu You drew water to make tea in 1169.
