About Fengguo Temple

A Liao-dynasty temple founded in 1020 in the old town of Yixian, whose main hall, nine bays wide and raised on a 3 m platform, is one of the largest surviving timber Buddhist halls in China. Inside sit seven Liao-period Buddhas of the past, each over 8 m high with its base and attended by bodhisattvas, with painted flying figures on the roof beams. The gates, an arch and a smaller hall are Qing-dynasty additions, and the main hall has been on China's tentative list for World Heritage status since 2013, together with the wooden pagoda at Yingxian.
