About Mausoleum of Zhu Su, Prince Ding of Zhou

The hillside tomb of Zhu Su (1361–1425), fifth son of the founding Ming emperor, who as Prince of Zhou compiled the Jiuhuang bencao, a pioneering guide to wild plants that can be eaten in times of famine. His tomb and that of a consort were cut into the hills as large brick-vaulted underground palaces, robbed long ago and now empty; the consort's tomb has 18 vaulted chambers off a ring corridor wide enough for a bus. The two tombs and the wooded hills around them are run as a small scenic area.
