About Yuan Zhongdu (Middle Capital of the Yuan)

The earthen remains of Yuan Zhongdu, the 'Middle Capital' that Emperor Wuzong began building on the grassland north of Zhangbei in 1307; work was halted in 1311 and the palace was burned in 1358 during the Red Turban uprising. Three nested walled enclosures can be traced on the ground as earthen walls and banks, with the foundations of the palace city's south gate, the I-shaped platform of the main hall and an excavated corner-tower platform. The Yuan Zhongdu Museum, in Zhangbei town about 15 km away, shows the finds and the story of the excavations.
