About Shangdu (Xanadu)

Shangdu, known in the West as Xanadu, was the summer capital of Kublai Khan's Yuan dynasty, founded in 1256 beside the Luan River in the grassland north of the Great Wall, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. The remains include the palace enclosure, imperial city, outer city, temples, tombs and the Tiefangang canal, with earthen walls and palace foundations still visible on open ground; the World Heritage property also takes in the Zhenzishan tomb group. A site museum, the Xilingol Cultural Heritage Museum, stands about 5 km south of the ruins.
