About Former Heping Village, Zhenyuan

The former Heping Village is a walled compound on Heping Street in Zhenyuan's old town, once a Qing garrison office and then a prison, that served as a camp for Japanese prisoners of war held by the Nationalist government from 1938 to 1944. Chinese records say 600 to 700 prisoners passed through and that some formed an anti-war league there, the name Heping (peace) coming from the Japanese writer Kaji Wataru, who worked with them. Parts of the compound were rebuilt in the 1980s and 2000s and now hold an exhibition; it is a national protected site (2006) and is described in official records as the only well-preserved Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in China.
