About Guandi Temple, Zhoukou
A temple to Guan Yu that also served as the guild hall of Shanxi and Shaanxi merchants trading at Zhoukou, where three rivers meet; it was begun in 1693 and finished in 1852 after repeated enlargements. Its three courtyards hold more than 140 bays of halls, galleries and an opera stage, with cast-iron flagpoles 22 m tall given by merchants in 1797 and a stone archway of 1765 densely carved with dragons, immortals and scenes from legend.
